What is the ABM Leadership Academy? 

The ABM Leadership Academy is designed to provide participants with transferable leadership skills, mentoring from breastfeeding experts, and the ability to uniquely advocate for and support under-served communities, addressing racial disparities, and increasing healthcare equity and access. 

Selected participants should expect to develop skills that enhance their: 

  • Clinical roles and responsibilities 

  • Work and ability to lead effectively within multidisciplinary teams 

  • Opportunities for career advancement 

  • Understanding of volunteer leadership competencies 
  • Comprehension and knowledge of racial disparities and health inequities within healthcare, specifically breastfeeding medicine 
  • Ability to advocate for the specialty of breastfeeding medicine within their institutions and communities 

What are the components of the Leadership Academy? 

If selected to participate in the ABM Leadership Academy,  participants commit to: 

  • Attend all meetings, workshops, and webinars associated with the program  

  • Maintain ABM membership status through 2023 

  •  Attend a kickoff workshop offered at the 2022 Annual International Meeting in Baltimore, MD, USA or virtually * 

  • Complete a leadership project 

  • Volunteer with ABM in the year after completing the program 

*Virtual kickoff will take place as two half-day sessions on Tuesday, September 21 and Wednesday, September 22 

What  is a Leadership Project? 

To utilize the leadership training and education conducted throughout the Leadership Academy, all participants will complete an individual leadership project. These projects should involve leadership activities such as working with a team or gathering support from stakeholders. 

Potential projects should be focused on the field of breastfeeding medicine, supporting the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine through innovation, addressing racial and health inequities, and advocacy.

Is there a fee to participate? Is financial assistance available? 

Yes.  

Tuition Fees: 

  • Category 1 Countries: $1000 USD 

  • Category 2 Countries: $500 USD 

  • Category 3 Countries: $350 USD 

Tuition Fees are the responsibility of the applicant. The grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation supports waiver of fees, Annual International Meeting registration fee, and flight and hotel accommodations for those representing and/or serving in vulnerable or under-served communities in the US, Mexico or Haiti. You may apply for this waiver inside the application process. 

 

Who can apply? 

The ABM Leadership Academy eligibility requirements are: 

  • ABM member in good standing (Accepted applicants must maintain their ABM membership through 2023.) 

  • Current medical resident/fellow, MD, DO, MBBS, DDS, DMD or equivalent degree from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy 

  • Able to commit to participating in the 11-month program and complete all program requirements.
