What is the ABM Leadership Academy? 

The ABM Leadership Academy is designed to provide participants with transferable leadership skills, mentoring from breastfeeding experts, and experience leading a project which advances breastfeeding medicine. 

Selected participants should expect to develop skills that enhance their: 

  • Clinical roles and responsibilities 

  • Work and ability to lead effectively within multidisciplinary teams 

  • Opportunities for career advancement 

  • Understanding of volunteer leadership competencies 
  • Comprehension and knowledge of racial disparities and health inequities within healthcare, specifically breastfeeding medicine 
  • Ability to advocate for the specialty of breastfeeding medicine within their institutions and communities

What are the components of the Leadership Academy? 

If selected to participate in the ABM Leadership Academy,  participants commit to: 

  • Must be an active ABM member in good standing
  • Must have access to Internet and Zoom
  • Must attend the virtual kick-off session on Friday, October 6
  • Must attend at least 80% (6) of webinar sessions
  • Agree to complete the assigned pre-work for each webinar session
  • Must complete and present a leadership project summary at the final wrap-up session
  • Must submit a project poster at the 2024 ABM annual meeting (guidance will be provided)
  • Must volunteer to serve the ABM in some capacity for at least one year following completion of the program

What is a Leadership Project? 

To utilize the leadership training and education conducted throughout the Leadership Academy, all participants will complete an individual leadership project. These projects should involve leadership activities such as working with a team or gathering support from stakeholders. 

Potential projects should be focused on the field of breastfeeding medicine, supporting the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine through innovation, addressing racial and health inequities, and advocacy.

Is there a fee to participate? Is financial assistance available? 

Yes.  

Tuition Fees: 

  • United States: $2000 USD 

  • Non-US Category 1 and Category 2 Countries: $1000 USD 

  • Category 3 Countries: $600 USD 

Tuition Fees are the responsibility of the applicant. 

Financial Assistance: In the application you will find a place to request a partial scholarship for one quarter of the tuition price. Applicants will be notified whether they receive the partial scholarship before committing to the Academy.

  • With scholarship United States: $1500 USD 

  • With scholarship Non-US Category 1 and Category 2 Countries: $750 USD 

  • With scholarship Category 3 Countries: $450 USD 

Who can apply? 

The ABM Leadership Academy eligibility requirements are: 

  • ABM member in good standing (Accepted applicants must maintain their ABM membership.) 

  • MD, DO, MBBS, DDS, DMD or equivalent degree from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy. Current medical residents/fellows in these programs are also welcome to apply.

  • Able to commit to participating in the 10-month program and complete all program requirements
